National Library of Israel-Israel Institute for Advanced Studies – Joint FellowshipCall for Applications (2027–2028 Academic Year)

The National Library of Israel (NLI) and the Israel Institute for Advanced Studies at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem (IIAS) invite established scholars holding tenured positions at academic or research institutions outside Israel to submit proposals for a joint fellowship at both institutions for the 2027–2028 academic year.

Research topics may include Jewish Studies, Israel Studies, Islam and Middle Eastern Studies, Music, and the Humanities. Preference will be given to projects that make substantive use of the NLI’s special collections.

Fellows will divide their time between the neighboring NLI and IIAS campuses in Jerusalem. They will benefit from the NLI’s unparalleled collections and professional expertise, as well as from the intellectually vibrant and supportive academic environment of IIAS. The fellowship includes a generous stipend and subsidized accommodation. The partnership between the two institutions is designed to foster innovative and original research that contributes meaningfully to the international scholarly community.

Eligibility
Applicants must hold a tenured position at an academic or research institution outside Israel.
This fellowship is not open to postdoctoral researchers.

Period of Residence
The IIAS and NLI academic year runs from September 1 through June 30.
Residencies are available for either 10 months or 5 months. Applicants must indicate their preferred residency period, choosing one of the following options:
A 10-month residency beginning September 1, 2027
A 5-month residency beginning September 1, 2027
A 5-month residency beginning February 1, 2028

Application Deadline
The online submission system will open on December 10, 2025.
The application deadline is March 26, 2026.
Incomplete applications will not be considered.
The joint NLI–IIAS Academic Committee will announce its decisions within seven months of the submission deadline.
